2006 Winter Survival Program
By Pete Demos
NWTF Winter Survival Chairman
Last
winter in the Michigan State Chapter Winter Survival Program
spent $17,500 to feed 23,000 wild turkeys. Request for funds
from the chapters was $26,000, but due to limited funds
available on $17,500 could be approved.
The primary source of winter survival funds is
the Michigan State Convention Banquet. Last year the
attendance was lower than previous years, resulting in fewer
funds available for winter feeding. The 2007 banquet is
scheduled for January 13, 2007 at the Valley Plaza Resort in
Midland, Michigan and all chapter and board members are urged
to attend and support the convention and banquet. Remember,
the Winter Survival Program is a supplement to your chapter
members
feeding activities. New this year to supplement the Winter
Survival Program funds the Michigan State Chapter will provide
products from the NWTF's excess merchandise, such as firearms,
prints, and etc. to be used by local chapters for fund raisers
for winter survival. Contact your R.D. for assistance and
product availability. Cost for these items will be paid by the
state chapter and 100% of the the profits from these fund
raisers will be returned to the local chapter for winter
survival feeding. The chapters may choose to utilize a local
FFL dealer if they desire for lower cost, improved selections
or for PR reasons. All requests should be made to the local
winter survival committee member utilizing the regular request
form.
Some chapters are planning added fund raisers
such as breakfasts or dinners, the R.D.'s will coordinate
these functions with the chapters. Also, the NSSF Gun Raffle
($20.00 tickets for choice of 1 or 3 guns) profits will go to
the Winter Survival Fund. All chapters are urged to
participate in this raffle. Tickets are available from your
R.D.'s and Ron Hopkins. These are high quality and very
valuable firearms being offered which should enhance ticket
sales.
Now is the time to contact your feed sources
for the best pricing, but be sure it is safe to feed to
turkeys. If it is OK to feed cattle it should be OK to feed to
turkeys. Send your winter survival request forms (minimum
requirements) to your nearest committee member for
pre-approval. Many thanks to each of you who work so hard to
provide feed and get it to the turkeys throughout the winter.
Your efforts are deeply appreciated. We look forward to seeing
you at the Michigan State Convention on January 13th.
